Romanticizing February with winter engagement sessions in this beautiful city. This year, I want February to feel less like, “It’s STILL winter??” and more like, “Spring is coming.” February is the color pink, rom-coms, and the days slowly getting longer again. These winter engagement sessions bring me so much joy because they remind me that there are so many good things to come in spring.

If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of the iconic blooms, keep in mind that construction around the Tidal Basin is still very heavy. Go early in the morning but still be prepared for crowds. 1. Wedding party, if you don’t know where to look or feel awkward walking down the aisle, look at the photographer and smile for beautiful processional photos!

2. Make sure your veil is secure (and the veil is the most forgotten item for a wedding ceremony), so that it doesn’t fly away as you process.

3. Keep your bouquet low to avoid obscuring your face as you walk back up the aisle (especially if you do a dip and kiss).

4. As you walk back up the aisle, don’t forget to steal one more kiss! You’ll get a lovely photo with your guests cheering behind you!

Having a fall wedding? This is your sign that fall colors are not mandatory. I love the way this late October wedding at @birkbyhouse leaned into bright pastels. The peachy florals brought some of the changing foliage into the space, and the colors flowed beautifully!

Other bright touches included a cotton candy stand (which made for great centerpieces once the party started)!

Let’s talk about “the ring.” Since I became a wedding photographer, I’ve photographed over 60 engagement rings (yes, I counted). We’re right in the middle of engagement season, the time between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, and the most popular time of year for proposals. When it comes to the ring, knowing your partner and their preferences is essential. I know some who have been very involved in choosing their ring, and others who were completely surprised. But much like a wedding dress, the ring is always personal. When I see the ring and the person wearing it, and I start to get to know them, it just makes sense. When you’ve gotten to the point of proposing, it’s because you truly know your partner, and I believe that’s why the ring always matches the person.

Some pretty pink shoes for ballet season 🩰 The Nutcracker is one of my favorite ballets and never fails to put me in the holiday spirit. I remember the music playing in our house growing up and dancing along. The Pas de deux always makes me emotional. I’m so happy to be able to foster a love of ballet, theater, and music with my kids as they grow up. I’m so so proud of their hard work over the past few months as they finish up their own Nutcracker performances this weekend!

The State Arboretum of Virginia is a spot that’s been on my radar for a while, but until recently, I’d never had a chance to visit! Allie and Chase met me there for their engagement session in November and we got to enjoy the last of the fall foliage while exploring the grounds. My favorite spot was the field towards the back of the property, where the light was just perfect during golden hour! I’m so excited to see this sweet couple again at @stonetowerweddings next fall!

Kathryn and Darian wed in a beautiful fusion of Persian and American cultures this weekend at the always lovely @birkbyhouse. Outside the foliage and overcast skies made for a perfect fall day, while the inside of the conservatory was decorated in fresh greens, blues, and pinks. A cotton candy artist treated guests to sugary creations during cocktail hour, and the dance floor was packed all night.

Wedding days are such a beautiful reminder of how much love we have in our lives. This sweet couple was wrapped up in so much love, and I wish them every happiness as they start this new chapter.

Putting the “best” in Sunday best 🥂 Lian and Hun Ki’s wedding day at @great.marsh this Sunday was classic, elegant and glamorous. This sweet pair found many ways throughout the day to honor their wonderful parents, and made each guest feel special with hand-written notes at each plate. My jaw dropped when I saw the draping in the reception space. Every detail was planned beautifully and with such intention.
